Mainspring workshop

Nong Prue, Chonburi

Work done well,
one piece at a time

Mainspring is a small, independent watch repair workshop on Beach Road. We focus on mechanical movements — from a first health check through to a full overhaul of complicated calibers.

— Our story

How Mainspring came to be

Mainspring grew out of a simple conviction: that a mechanical watch worth keeping is worth repairing thoughtfully. The workshop opened on Beach Road in Nong Prue after years spent working through movements at a repair bench in central Thailand — learning the differences between calibers, accumulating the right tooling, and developing the patience that the work demands.

The name is taken from the coiled spring at the heart of every mechanical movement — the component that stores energy and releases it steadily over time. It felt like a fitting description of what we try to do: take something winding down, restore its energy, and return it running well.

We keep the number of pieces in the workshop manageable so that nothing sits unattended and nothing is rushed. Owners receive a written condition report with every job. For anything beyond a standard service, we share a costed plan before starting. The watch moves to the next step only when the owner agrees.

The workshop is on Beach Road, a short distance from central Pattaya. We are easy to reach on foot or by car, and we accept pieces sent by insured post from further afield.

— Core values

  • Careful documentation

Every job produces a written record of what was inspected, found, and done.

  • Owner agreement first

No work proceeds on a larger job without a costed plan and your approval.

  • Measured pace

We take on a number of pieces that allows each one to receive proper attention.

  • Plain language

Reports and explanations are written without jargon for owners of all backgrounds.

KP

Krish Patel

Head Watchmaker

Over fifteen years working on Swiss and Japanese mechanical movements. Handles strip-and-rebuild and complicated caliber overhaul work.

NW

Nanthida Wongsa

Service Coordinator

Manages intake, condition reporting, and owner communication. Ensures every piece is logged on arrival and tracked through to completion.

SM

Saowapha Mahon

Technician

Focuses on inspection work, timing measurement, and exterior finishing. Prepares detailed notes for all movement assessments.

How we approach the work

Ultrasonic Cleaning

Parts are cleaned in an ultrasonic bath to remove dried lubricants and debris before any fresh oil is applied. This step matters for long service intervals.

Multi-Position Timing

Every movement is measured on a timing machine across multiple positions before and after service. Figures are included in the condition report.

Caliber-Appropriate Lubricants

We use lubricants matched to each part — escapement, mainspring, gear train — rather than a single oil applied throughout. Correct lubrication affects both accuracy and longevity.

Written Service Records

A written record accompanies every completed piece, covering what was inspected, what was done, and which parts were replaced. Useful for future servicing or resale.

Owner Consent at Each Stage

No additional work proceeds without the owner's go-ahead. If something unexpected is found during a service, we stop, document it, and contact the owner before continuing.

Piece Tracking from Intake

Each watch is logged on arrival with a condition note. Owners receive a receipt and a reference number. Progress can be queried at any point during the service period.

— Expertise

What we know, and what that means for your watch

Mechanical watch repair covers a wide range of calibers — from straightforward three-hand movements to multi-complication pieces with chronographs, perpetual calendars, and other added functions. Not every workshop works on all types, and not every watchmaker has seen the full range. At Mainspring, the focus has been on building depth rather than breadth: understanding the movements we accept, knowing where the wear typically appears, and working through them in the right order.

For a daily piece, the most common reason to service is that the movement has not been opened in eight to ten years. Lubricants dry or migrate, causing increased friction in the gear train and escapement. The watch loses time, stops unexpectedly, or begins running erratically in certain positions. A full strip-and-rebuild addresses all of this: everything is cleaned, re-oiled, and reassembled, with timing verified across positions before the movement goes back into the case.

For a complicated movement — a chronograph, for example — the work is more involved. The chronograph mechanism adds a layer of levers, springs, and cams that interact with the base movement. Each must be assessed individually, and the interaction between them verified once reassembled. This is why we produce a costed plan in advance and take care to document the work: the owner of a valued piece deserves to know what was done and why.

Based in Nong Prue, Chonburi, we serve owners along the Eastern Seaboard and further afield. We accept pieces sent by insured post when a visit is not practical. The workshop is easy to find on Beach Road, and a brief call or message in advance is always welcome.
